She’d glimpsed the engagement ring Dena had worn—a diamond solitaire on a white-gold band. Polished and sophisticated, like the woman who had worn it.

“I suppose I could’ve just given you Dena’s,” he said now. “But I didn’t think—”

“No,” Sadie said, the word torn from the depths of her soul. “No,” she said again. “Not those. These.” She tipped the box to allow more light in. There were two rings—a thin gold filigree band with an exquisitely cut piece of jade inlaid for an engagement ring. And the wedding ring was pure jade inset into a bead of Celtic knots. Her Morrissey ancestors would have approved. A circle of green and gold fire. Primitive and perfect. Completely her.

“Dena’s rings were worth a hell of a lot more, moneywise,” he said. “But they didn’t…look right. Didn’t look like something you’d wear.” Numbly Sadie shook her head. “No. I wouldn’t.”

If he’d brought Dena’s for her to wear, she would have turned the diamond into her palm, clenched her fingers around it and never opened her fist. But it’s what she would have expected.

After all, what difference would it have made, if they were only going to be married a week?

These rings, however, were so completely “her” it was spooky. How had Spence known?

She shot him a quick probing glance, amazed.

“I didn’t buy you one the first time,” he reminded her.

“I know. But you gave me that old pipestone ring you used to wear.” He stared at her.

“Don’t you remember it? The one that belonged to your granddad.”

“My granddad’s ring?” He looked stunned. “I thought I’d lost it.” Sadie shook her head. “No. You took it off and gave it to me. Put it on my finger,” she told him. “Until you got me something better, you said.” She shrugged. He still looked poleaxed by the news. “You really didn’t remember?”

He shook his head, looking almost dazed.

“Well, you were gone a month, you know…after. And then I guess I forgot. I should have given it back to you.”

The truth was, she hadn’t forgotten. And she never would. She’d loved that ring.

It was precious to her. And she’d kept it on a chain around her neck for the next month.

Only after Spence had come in and told her the divorce was final had she removed it.

She would have given it to him if he’d asked, but he never had. So she had put it in the drawer of her bedside table. More nights than she liked to remember she opened that drawer right before she went to sleep. She touched the ring and thought about what might have been.

“I still have it.” She swallowed, then made herself say words she never wanted to say.

“You can have it back if you want.”

“I’d…like that.” His voice had a ragged edge. “It’s the only thing I had that belonged to him. We can trade. If you want,” he added quickly. “If you don’t like these I can get you something else. I just thought—”

“I do like them,” Sadie said fervently.
